Trees for the Future

Cajanus cajan (“pigeon peas”) thriving on Grace Masau’s farm in Kenya. These plants have been cultivated for thousands of years, and the peas are a good source of protein when paired with a grain. The leaves are also useful for animal fodder and “green manure” – when mixed into the soil, they return the nitrogen that intensive agriculture can deplete. Every tree and plant in a forest garden plays its own vital role.
